Sharp rock scrambles and unpredictable gravel paths within the French Alps usually call for bulky, heavy-duty hiking boots. Key features that make hiking boots a trusted pick rather than sneakers are thick lugs for non-slip traction and ankle support for stability. I naturally gravitate toward sneakers, so I decided to take a gamble on the notably tough Chamonix terrain with lighter footwear. But not just any old kick—the max-cushioned Hoka Mafate 5 Trail Running Shoes.

Traditionally known as an ultra-marathon trail running shoe, the Hoka Mafate 5 model is designed to withstand impact and grip technical terrain like a pro. The Mafate was actually Hoka’s first-ever shoe, launched in 2010, so I knew it had what it takes to tackle the French trails. For my wear test, I chose to take them for a spin on a mix of hikes and runs ranging from one to 10 miles on the beautiful Mont Blanc summit. Long story short, the Hoka Mafate 5 showed the trails who’s boss.

The Hoka Mafate 5 Trail Running Shoes have the same pillow-soft cushioning as their popular sibling, the Bondi 9. The thick plush interior and exterior protected my feet from all jagged rocks and stones, which is huge when logging for hours. The footbed features an extremely comfortable EVA foam midsole that absorbs impact, whether going fast or slow. Unlike rigid, stiff hiking boots, these felt cloud-like and responsive with every stride, which is essential during the repetitive stress of Alpine descents and inclines. My feet were supported and cradled—never sore.

Although the cushion is mega plush, it’s on the firmer side, which creates more stability when gaining elevation. My feet stayed locked in place without added foam at the sides of the midsole, which is found in many stability-focused shoes, such as Hoka’s Arahi 8. Plus, the insoles hugged my arches. Just note that if you severely overpronate (have collapsing arches), you should look into a trail shoe built with extra features designed for flat feet.

The thick 5-millimeter lug sole provides superior traction and steadiness. I felt confident stepping across moss and dusty ditches, but I think a shorter lug option is best for wet days. I ran in the Mafate 5 sneakers post-rainstorm and found mud caked the lugs, causing a near-slip. I had to wash them back at the hotel to remove all the mud from the outsole. The knit upper is also not waterproof—it took more than 24 hours to dry.

On the flip side, the toe box is incredibly spacious and doesn’t chafe the sides of my feet. As someone with bunions, it’s a game-changer that I don’t get blisters or deal with throbbing pain while I’m in motion. The Mafate 5 sneakers don’t come in a wide width option like other Hoka shoes, but believe me when I say it’s not necessary. Sizes range from 5 to 11 in women’s and fit true to size.

Hoka has a mass following besides me, including reviewers on the Hoka website. “I have tried and worn a lot of different Hokas, but these are the best shoes I have ever put on my feet,” said one reviewer. “They’re light, but give you so much cushion, shock absorbent, and propulsion.” My observation that they fit wide is also validated—one reviewer said the toe box is roomy enough for wool socks.

Whether you’re a novice hiker or a decade-long pro, the Hoka Mafate 5 checks off many boxes of what makes a trail shoe great. Lace them up and take on the trails with confidence.

If you’re curious about other trail shoes on the market, here are some beloved options that don’t skimp on comfort and stability.
